Canal-O-Ween

We headed off to Yardley, PA yesterday afternoon to hit up a favorite restaurant as we waited for the sun to set.  Last year, we heard about a jack-o'-lantern blaze along the canal that runs through their small quaint town of shops and homes.  Thankfully, Canal-O-Ween occurs the full week of Halloween (it ends on Saturday).  

Within walking distance from the restaurant, we headed up a quiet road towards the canal.  The weather felt like Halloween had gone nowhere at all.  We spotted the unending row of pumpkins along the dark canal and joined a slow walk with other observers.  Studying every variety of carved face, the crowd was very quiet, like we were in some kind of strange outdoor museum.  The air was cold and damp, so we bought some hot cider from a small stand along the row of shining pumpkins.  It truly felt like Second Halloween.  

So many great faces and carvings, in the most perfect (and dark) setting. 

Hexeglaawe: The Witch's Chair

The latest investigation for our Hexeglaawe Pennsylvania folklore series led us to the St. James Episcopal Church in Bristol, PA.  Behind the Church you will find a small iron chair near the grave of Merritt P. Wright (1860-1911).  Little is known about her, but the local legend claims Merritt was a witch.  According to the legend, if you go to the graveyard and sit in the chair at midnight during the month of October, you will feel the cold hands of the witch.  Curiously, there were fake cobwebs stretched over the chair and a small twig witch broom to the right of it.  This seemed to indicate the community, and the Church, embrace (or allow) the legend to continue.  We didn't wait around until midnight, since it was November, but we definitely plan to head back next October to see if the legend is true.

1987: A Playlist

Catching up here and celebrating a wonderful Halloween in the bag.  I'll be posting more photos in the days ahead and featuring some favorite Haunts, but we wanted to share the playlist that was playing during the evening.  It was a great Halloween gathering and we got a nice crowd of family, friends, and neighbors.  As the Hallmark Howl-o-ween soundscape played on the porch outside, songs recorded in 1987 and prior were playing inside.  It was a very nostalgic evening, and everyone seemed to really appreciate a throwback Halloween, both inside and out.
