Now Watching: Gravity

Oh boy.  How can something like this exist?

As a James Horner fanatic, this song was on the COCOON soundtrack, and it caused me great stress as it would come on seemingly out of nowhere and you'd have to fast forward the cassette.  Or hear the song.

Oddly, it's grown on me over the years.  But this video is horrific and PURE gold at the same time.  Please watch it until the end, as there's a strange "robotic rap" that is heavenly.  You'll never be the same again.

Gloriously awful.

It's not often that you see peak 80s distilled quite like that without it being someone's retroactive satirical take.

It's so chock-full of lunacy, that it's hard to pick a 'most insane' moment, but I think I have to go with the dolphins as backup singers.

The dolphins moment was absolutely the most insane to me as well.
This thing MUST have been lunacy even back in the 80s. And that voice coming out of THAT guy. So confusing. The entire thing felt like a Tim & Eric parody.

Pure gold.

Did Cunningham direct this video? I remember the song but definitely not this video. His beard.
Its like the movie Zardoz meets Herbie Hancock. Tim and Eric totally.

I just checked and he DID direct the video! Ugh.

A career high point for sure.

The Fonz would not approve.

Richie would totally bring up the shark incident.

Important to note (I think) that this is the guy who sang MANIAC from the film Flash Dance.

I will be featuring some of his other videos here and there on this blog in the future.
Gems.

Don’t google images of him. It’s frightening.

Oh, yes, it's definitely Michael Sembello of 'Maniac' fame.

And one funny little tidbit there is that song was evidently originally inspired by a news report about a serial killer.

It was originally written by Dennis Matkosky and the lyrics later updated to work with the 'Flashdance' movie...the original lyrics evidently included this bit of distinctly Not-Top-40 awfulness:

"He's a maniac. He just moved in next door. He'll kill your cat and nail it to the floor."
