Most horror reviews of FRIGHT NIGHT (1985) mention that Ed Thompson was the best friend of the main character Charlie Brewster. Even the lesser-known sequel makes mention of Charlie's "best friend" Ed. But it's always bugged me because it's pretty well established that Charlie was getting on Ed's last nerve, and treated him rather poorly. I present the below evidence as Exhibit A.

Best friends meant something different in the80’s apparently lol.
haha I treated all of my friends back then like trash. And had cruel nicknames for them.
And I'd never part with 8 bucks for monster advice.
I don't get that 'best friend' take at all...it always seemed like it was more of a 'frenemy' situation than anything.
Setting the many other indicators aside, when approached for guidance on how to contend with the impending visit from Dandridge, Ed asks "Why should I help you anyway?". I'm not sure that's really the appropriate 'friend' response? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Speaking of which, but off-topic, the most perplexing thing for me was how any self-respecting late-night horror flick devotee would ever need to consult anyone for the basic vampire defense rules. Always a head-scratcher.
an EXCELLENT point about his knowledge!
so, I always felt like Ed was in on some joke with others about Charlie. Like he was punking Charlie. But Ed was too weird to be in another click. He shouldn't have gone down the alley without a friend.
